India Scotch Fraud Ring Busted; ‘Mastermind’ Still At Large

Authorities in Mumbai seized nearly 500 litres of low-quality local whisky that was packaged and was to be sold as Scotch brands, including Johnnie Walker Black Label and Teachers, according to DNA, an Indian news site.

Three men were arrested but the “mastermind” of the five month old operation eluded capture is still at large, according to an official.

The group worked by obtaining empty brand bottles, refilling them with cheap local whisky and selling them to people unsophisticated drinkers who couldn’t tell the difference.

Half the Scotch sold in India is suspected to be counterfeit, and Johnnie Walker owner Diageo is fighting back with a new tamper-resistant cap.
